The truth about fiverr & upwork for copywriters

September 03, 20243 min read

here's a truth about fiverr & upwork — and why they aren’t helping copywriters sign high-paying clients

you don't "find" clients

and clients don't "find" you

that's blind luck

if that's your game as a copywriter

it's no surprise you're clientless

or low on clients

and it's no surprise you might be underpaid, overworked, and undervalued

fiverr & upwork are all about "finding"

when the goal is to "attract" clients

you could argue your freelancer profile "attracts" clients

but it's not really

they're finding you

and they control all the power

they hold all the leverage

they can choose from an abundance of copywriters who they want to work with

they can, and often do, choose the cheapest option that best suits them

and here the copywriter is

  • with a skill so valuable it can move someone to act

  • with a skill so valuable it can change a belief system

  • that's worth more than $20/hour

but how does a copywriter "attract" a client?

by seeing it as a process

and a process you control a hell of a lot more of than you think

sure, "finding" sounds easier

you could get lucky

that's the same reason we're attracted to the lottery

we COULD get lucky

but the chances are incredibly slim

"attracting" clients sounds like work

and it is

but once the initial work is done

you can automate it

you can "work" less

and have the system work for you

the work involves creating systems that "attract" ideal clients to you

essentially, this is marketing

it involves:

  1. positioning

  2. messaging

  3. distribution

  4. journey

  5. human behaviour

and when it's broken down into its simplest parts, it seems really easy

  • get their attention

  • get them to take a small action to show they're interested

  • build their desire to work with you

  • get them to take a larger action to become a client

how do you do that?

that's the great news!

you're a copywriter

you use your copywriting skills

this is essentially what you're helping your clients do - isn't it?

either:

  1. get more of their ideal clients following them

  2. get more of their ideal clients on their email lists

  3. convert more of their ideal clients into paying customers

you're doing the exact same for yourself

but the journey and the offer are different

  • use ads or your social content to get the attention of your ideal clients

  • get them to take a small action by offering something they find insanely valuable - for free

  • market to them on your email list, YouTube channel, or podcast and build their desire to work with you

  • hit them with an irresistible offer every now and then, and the one's who are ready to act will

there is no persuading them or convincing them or influencing them

what there is, is consistently showing up with an incredible ton of value

that's hyper-specific for what they're experiencing

and then, with time, offering them something they'd be stupid to say not to

something that solves their most triggering problems and achieve their dream outcomes

the result of this system and process?

the result of this little bit of work?

you're not fighting for $20 contracts on freelancer sites

and you're not "hoping" that you'll find clients or that they'll find you

you're taking control

and you have a waitlist of your ideal clients at different stages of their buying journey

and when they're ready to buy they're happy to pay $10k+

why?

because you marketed to them in a way that "attracted" them

and when they were attracted to you they say how professional and how much of an expert you are

and you delivered a ton of value to them

and they valued that

they valued it so much that they positioned you even more as an authority

as a specialist

and that's insanely valuable to them

TL;DR: stop trying to "find" clients or think that clients will "find" you. start taking control of your clientele and your income by building out a simple marketing engine specifically for a copywriter
